Background

The project was required in order to reduce the concentration of PM10 particles in the atmospheric basin of the city. Not implementing this project would have represented a continuation of dispersed PM10 particles in the atmosphere, and continue exposure of the population to respiratory ailments. This situation represented a serious health problem, as during the summer months, when the ground is dry due to lack of rain, automobile transit, and frequent winds in the region, cause the finest dust particles to remain suspended in the air and thus create a potential source of diseases in the respiratory system, and allergies, mainly in children, young adults and senior citizens.

Description

The objective of the project is to reduce harmful emission by increasing street paving coverage as well as improving roadway and traffic infrastructure in order to reduce the suspended dust particles (PM10) and vehicle emissions, therefore improving air quality and the health of the citizens.

Benefits

The project consists of paving existing unpaved roads using asphalt pavement. The scope of the project was a 2 year program of paving (237,634 m2) and includes rehabilitation of water and wastewater collection lines, construction of storm sewers as required, and other tasks related to the project.
