Background
At the outset of the project, the majority of the low income communities of Playas de Rosarito had inadequate wastewater (WW) services. WW was disposed of through latrines, cesspools and, in some instances, directly to the surface waters which discharge to the Pacific Ocean and indirectly affect coastal resources in the US. The project’s biggest challenge was the difficult negotiations with the land owners (Ejido Mazatlan), which complicated the development of the project and caused modifications to the original collector alignments. This project is referred to as Rosarito I.
Description
The purpose of the project was to eliminate exposure to untreated wastewater discharges by expanding the wastewater collection system to the unserved areas, reducing groundwater pollution and the risk of waterborne diseases.
Benefits
The project consisted of improvements to the wastewater collection system to unserved areas of Poblado Morelos, La Mina, Colinas de Rosarito, Colinas de Montecarlo and Santa Lucia in Playas de Rosarito. Collected WW is now conveyed to existing Rosarito I and Rosarito Norte WWTPs.
