Background
The population of Agua Prieta increased from 20,754 to 60,000 between 1970 and 1998, due to significant growth in the maquiladora industry in the area. This growth resulted in a backlog of urban infrastructure and public services, especially with respect to public maintenance.
Description
This project included the following components:
- Constructing and equipping a new sanitary landfill, in accordance
with existing regulations. - Restructuring the waste collection service by redesigning routes
and purchasing additional collection trucks. - Closing the existing open air dump.
- Strengthening the institutional capacity of the municipal
administration in terms of waste collection and disposal to
facilitate efficient system management and operation. - Constructing secondary projects, including: access roads, control
booth, surface drainage system, scales, fence surrounding
property, signs, restrooms, landscaping, and structures to contain
light materials. - Purchasing equipment.
Benefits
This project will help reduce environmental and health risks by adequately disposing of the city’s municipal garbage and by covering the existing open air dump. Reduced smoke and odors will also help the neighboring city of Douglas, Arizona, comply with U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency air quality standards.
