Background
Water and wastewater services are provided by the local utility, JMAS. In 2012, water service and wastewater collection coverage was estimated at 95% and 70%, respectively. The wastewater treatment plant has a design capacity of 6.4 million gallon a day (mgd), with current inflows of 2.5 mgd.
A section of the wastewater collection system in the Felipe Angeles neighborhood in Nuevo Casas Grandes is undersized, resulting in sewage overflows from manholes along the streets. These sewage spills pose a significant risk for the transmission of diseases due to the potential for human contact with raw sewage and contaminated water and soil.
To remedy this situation, JCAS is proposing a project to provide adequate infrastructure to collect and convey the wastewater flows to the treatment plant. In addition, 65 households that do not currently have access to sewer services will be connected to the system.
Description
The project consists of the construction of a new wastewater collector
and sewer lines, and includes:
- Felipe Angeles Collector: 7,276 feet of 24-inch PVC pipe.
- Sewer lines: 3,843 linear feet of 8-inch PVC pipe.
- Manholes: 33
- Residential connections: Installation of 65 new sewer
connections.
Benefits
The improvements to the wastewater system infrastructure will ensure reliable service and eliminate potential health and environmental risks associated with raw sewage spills. Specifically, the project will prevent up to 0.73 mgd of untreated wastewater discharges.
