Background

The Avenue B&C Colonia is located in Yuma County, surrounded by the City of Yuma, Arizona. The B&C Colonia did not have a wastewater collection (WWC) system and the WW was treated through the use of latrines, cesspools, and septic tanks. However, due to its proximity to the Colorado River, pooling of WW on the surface was common due to the shallow water table. The state of Arizona required the formation of an Improvement District before this unincorporated community could request any funding for the project.

Description

The purpose of the project was to eliminate exposure to untreated wastewater discharges by expanding the wastewater collection system to the unserved areas, reducing groundwater pollution and the risk of waterborne diseases.

Benefits

The project consisted of the provision of a wastewater collection system to the un-served area of Avenue B & C Colonia in Yuma, Arizona. Collected wastewater is conveyed to an existing wastewater treatment plant.
