Background
In 2010, water service coverage in Praxedis was estimated at 48.5% with 565 connections. Residents without running water in their homes have to haul water from tank trucks or use substandard connections, such as plastic water hoses. These water sources tend to be more susceptible to contamination, as well as foster unsanitary practices and living conditions.
Project Scope
The project consisted of expanding the water distribution system to unserved areas, as well as improving all elements of the existing system that required rehabilitation. The main components of the project included:
- Installation of 600 residential water hookups
- Construction of 30,472 ft. of water transmission and supply lines and 77,192 ft. of water distribution lines
- Electromechanical equipment and discharge lines for four new deep wells
- Four chlorine gas-based disinfection units
- Construction of an 118,800-gallon elevated storage tank
- Installation of a telemetry system to automate the water supply system
Benefits
With this project water service coverage was increased to 100% of the community, thus reducing the risk of infections associated with low water quality. Improvements to the water supply system also ensured safe and reliable water service for all residents.
