Background
At the outset of the project, several communities in Tecate had inadequate water and wastewater services. Potable water was supplied using water trucks and WW was disposed of through latrines, cesspools and, in some instances, directly to surface waters that discharge to the Tecate River. The water trucks were operated either by the city or private companies with much higher water rates. WWTP discharges were not compliant with applicable norms and regulations in BOD and TSS. This project was referred as the Tecate Project.
Description
The objective of the proposed project was to improve human health and environmental conditions in Tecate through the implementation of projects aimed at improving and expanding water, wastewater collection, and treatment systems.
Benefits
The project consisted of the expansion of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems to un-served areas, and improvements in the trickling filter of the Tecate WWTP with a capacity of 4.6 MGD. The Project did not increase the WWT capacity.
