Background
The City owns and operates a solid waste municipal landfill that provides disposal service to the city of Del Rio, Laughlin Air Force Base and Val Verde County.
The current landfill was built in 1990 on 106 acres of land and is comprised of six permitted cells. Cells No. 1 and No. 2 are at capacity, while Cell No. 3 is expected to reach capacity in February 2004. In accordance with Texas regulations and the City’s solid waste permit, the landfill must maintain adequate capacity or cease to operate. Consequently, the next cell must be ready to accept waste when capacity in Cell No. 3 is reached.
Description
The project consists of expansion and improvements to the municipal solid waste landfill, as follows:
• Construction of Cell No. 4 on 8.5 acres of land
• Purchase of a landfill compactor with a minimum capacity of 150 ton/day
Benefits
Expansion of the landfill will allow the City to provide uninterrupted sanitation services to residents in Del Rio and Val Verde County. In addition, the purchase of a landfill compactor will enable a better in place density of the refuse and thus prolong the life of the landfill.
