Background
For over 30 years the residents of Ojinaga deposited their solid waste without formal control in an open-air dump, which represents an environmental risk for contamination of soil and aquifers, as well as a source of infectious disease for the community.
In 1998, the State of Chihuahua developed a Solid Waste Management project, which included a solid waste landfill that is expected to be in service until 2015. In the same year, the State of Chihuahua and the Municipality of Ojinaga financed the first cell of the project, which is now full. New cells must be opened to accommodate current and future
waste disposal.
Description
The project consists of improvements to the solid waste collection and disposal services, and includes closing the open-air dumpsite, modification and expansion of the landfill, and acquisition of equipment. In addition, various institutional strengthening actions will be performed including the creation of the municipal sanitation service department,
personnel training and public awareness campaigns.
Benefits
This project will directly benefit 100% of the urban population by providing safe, efficient and reliable sanitation services to residents in the area, which will, in turn, enhance the health and welfare of the community by eliminating the risk of infectious diseases.
