Background

In 2019, water service coverage was estimated at 98% of the population and wastewater collection at 79%. However, most of the sewer system has exceeded its useful life and is showing signs of deterioration, resulting in leaks and overflows from various manholes that eventually flow into the Rio Grande. Residents without service dispose of their wastewater in substandard septic tanks, latrines or cesspools, which pose a serious risk for contamination of surface and groundwater resources.

Description

The project consists of the expansion and rehabilitation of the wastewater collection and treatment system in Nueva Ciudad Guerrero.

Objective

The project will provide first-time access to wastewater services to 244 homes in unserved areas of the city, as well as improve service to 1,040 homes already connected to the wastewater collection system. The new infrastructure will also provide the capacity to treat 12 lps (0.27 mgd) of wastewater, sufficient to serve 100% of the community, as well as improve the quality of the effluent discharged to receiving water bodies, thereby helping to reduce water pollution and the risk of waterborne diseases. The new plant will also have a methane capture and conversion system to reduce the effects of greenhouse gas emissions.
